What Toby Collyer's West Brom return would mean for Jayson Molumby
Toby Collyer's return to West Bromwich Albion could leave Jayson Molumby in a tough spot.
James Morrison's midfield engine room has undergone some significant changes this summer.
Rabby Nzingoula and Felix Horn Myhre have joined, and both look like being quality additions.
Meanwhile, Alex Mowatt has left for Derby, leaving just Molumby and Ousmane Diakite as the only surviving senior central midfielders from last season.
However, Albion may not be done adding to this department before the summer transfer window shuts.
A reunion with Man United's Collyer could be on the cards, and that threatens to push Molumby towards The Hawthorns fringes.
How similar are Toby Collyer and Jayson Molumby's midfield profiles?
West Brom have lodged a bid to re-sign Collyer this week, with the 22-year-old seemingly not in Michael Carrick's first-team plans.
Should that deal go through, Morrison would all of a sudden have a fairly crowded central midfield group, and thus one or two exits may be needed.
Molumby has been with the Baggies since the summer of 2021, when he initially joined on loan from Brighton before turning his stay permanent in 2022.
Now 27, the Irish international has proven to be a quality signing for Albion over the years, but there are signs he's dropping down the pecking order.
Indeed, he's been on the bench for West Brom's first two competitive games of this season, and so his head could be on the chopping block.
His case for surviving the axe in B71 isn't made stronger when his and Collyer's underlying numbers from the 2025-26 Championship season are compared.
As per FotMob, Molumby created 0.99 chances per game compared to Collyer's 1.26, whilst the former played 46.4 successful passes to the latter's 57.0 per 90.
Meanwhile, Collyer outperformed Molumby per 90 for duels won (5.80 to 4.10), touches (82.2 to 67.7), tackles (3.03 to 1.09) and recoveries (7.56 to 5.93).
The United man did the same for interceptions (1.26 to 0.74) and clearances (2.02 to 1.30) as well.
In 17 Championship games, Collyer wasn't dribbled past a single time either, whereas Molumby was on 24 occasions from 38 matches.
So, Collyer did put up considerably better underlying numbers in the Championship last season than Molumby in key midfield areas.
That's not a good sign for his prospects of staying if Collyer arrives, but what is the latest on his potential Hawthorns exit?
Where West Brom stand with Molumby transfer
Given the vast swathes of Championship experience Molumby has under his belt, he'd surely have suitors up and down the second tier.
Wrexham have reportedly shown an interest in Molumby, but no offers from the Red Dragons are known to be on the table at present.
Since those links with Wrexham first emerged earlier this month, however, they have signed Ben Whiteman from Preston.
Therefore, Wrexham may no longer be in the market for a central midfielder, leaving Molumby potentially short of options for now.
He is still contracted at The Hawthorns until the summer of 2028 though, meaning there isn't an absolute necessity to sell him in this window.
